2 Natural Sources for Electrolytes and Hydration

Picture
Imagine this, you've been sweating really hard or have had a case of that nasty stomach flu.  You suspect that you may be dehydrated and you need a beverage that's going to refuel your body because you've depleting essential nutrients/minerals, so you head to the store and you decide because you need "Electrolytes" you reach for that specialty performance drink.  WAAAAIIIIITTTT a minute!  Before you grab that "performance" drink and thinking you're doing your body a world of good - think again.  Many of those beverages have some type of enhancer that is not good for your body - whether its high fructose corn syrup, or a petroleum based product to "disperse the flavor" evenly throughout the beverage, or maybe some other artificial ingredient that you simply do not need.

Your body simply needs the proper balance of Electrolytes to help you re-hydrate or balance your hydration.  When your body becomes dehydrated (whether it's through sweat from being active, or being sick), your body needs liquid and the proper balance of electrolytes to help rebalance the body.  By definition -  "An electrolyte is any substance that contains free ions that behaves as an electrically conductive medium (conducts electricity). All higher forms of life cannot exist without electrolytes, and that includes humans." - medicalnewstoday.com

You can also have too much fluid and enough electrolytes, which can also be dangerous.

Our bodies' electrolytes contain Calcium, Potassium, and Sodium.  Electrolytes control multiple responses in the body - muscle and nerve function, hydration, blood pressure, and re-build of tissue.

Our electrolyte levels can fluctuate based on the amount of fluid in our bodies, and of course the changes our bodies may go through.  When there's too much fluid in the body, electrolyte levels can be low, and we may crave salt - sodium.  When there's not enough fluid in the body, our bodies may exhibit muscle cramps and spasms, which is an indicator of not enough potassium, we need to rehydrate appropriately. In both of these cases these are signs that our electrolytes are out of balance and we need to replenish our electrolytes or rehydrate.

A host of medical conditions can occur if we do not keep our electrolytes balanced properly.  So without overthinking it - here are 2 key ingredients that you can use to keep your electrolyte levels balanced.

Coconut Water:
Rich in potassium and other nutrients, the body quickly and easily absorbs coconut water without much effort in trying to figure out what to do with it.  Opt for the coconut water in tetra paks or that have been minimally processed.  I make my own performance drink which includes (chia seeds, coconut water, and additional fruit to give it some flavor, the chia seeds absorb the coconut water - between 7-9 times their size in volume, and it keeps me from having to go to the restroom so soon/fast).  Coconut water is a super beverage within it's own right! The benefits of coconut water are endless.

Sea Salt (I prefer Himalayan sea salt):
Himalayan sea salt has more than 70 trace minerals and nutrients that are essential to the human body - add some to your water if you need a quick power beverage.
